There was an optional parent-teacher conference on 30 April. Knowing me, if it is optional, chances are that I will not voluntarily go see the teachers. And since there was a “student-led conference” earlier in the month where Tasha showed us what she learnt and did in school (which I think was a brilliant idea), there is no need for me to see the teachers again. Or so I thought.......I was “invited” to come in and speak with the teachers.
I did not know what to expect coz Tasha was, I think, doing quite well at school. Anyways, the teachers told me that Tasha is doing very well in school. They only want to bring one thing to my attention – she does not speak out as much as she should. They couldn’t quite figure her out. Is she shy? But she talks a lot with her friends (especially in class when the teachers are talking!) and in small groups. But she very rarely puts up her hand and volunteers to speak or answer any questions.
Sigh……this is what I want to avoid and this is why I sent her to an international school! So, when I got home. I had a heart-to-heart talk with her. And to encourage her to participate in class, I drew up a chart. And everyday after school she is to mark down (i) how many times she raised her hand when teacher asks a questions; and (ii) how many times she get to answer (regardless of right or wrong answer). And at the end of the term, I will add up the numbers, convert them to dollars (HK$, of course) and she can buy something she likes! And since Tasha is such a good girl, this system works brilliantly……..except for my purse. It has been 2 weeks and she averages 5 times a day. Hope she keeps it up. I hope things will be as easy with Andrea!
