Tasha came home to Hong Kong last night. Our initial plan for the summer was for all of us to spend 2 weeks in KL and then Tasha to stay on for another 3 weeks. This is not the first time she got to spend time with her extended family by herself (and a helper). But, this time, she isn’t doing well. She started getting upset (on and off) in the middle of our 2-week vacation and progressively got worst. Despite telling her that although we planned for her stay in KL for 3 weeks, she has the choice of returning earlier. This did not seem to provide any comfort.
About a week after we left, she got so homesick, she cried and asked for us several times a day, especially during bedtime and woke up in the middle of the night crying. So, the next day, we called her and said she could come back and the earliest seat we could get is in 5 days. I guess 3 weeks seems a long time to a child (despite her mature mannerism, she is after all only 6). Now that she could count the number of days, she was a different child. She was instantly more cheerful and was able to play and enjoyed herself.
What can I say. As my mother kept reminding me (and tell everyone who would listen), in this aspect, she is just like me. When I went away for secondary school in Singapore, I was extremely home sick and I was home sick for the entire 4 years I was there!
Hope things will improve when Andrea is older and the 2 of them can go back to KL during summer time. In the mean time, the grandparents, uncles and aunties will just have to come and visit us then!
