Beijing Day 1: The Great Wall of China

Apologies for the long delay, the long awaited photos from Beijing are finally here!

During the school's mid term break during the end of October, we took the kids to Beijing, primarily because Tasha wanted to see the Great Wall of China. And since we have been to Beijing before, be it some 15 years ago, we decided to take it easy and luxuriously!

Day 1:
We took the first flight out to Beijing and landed in the newly opened (new to us anyways) Terminal 3.

From there, we were taken straight to the Great Wall. As our accommodation for the first night would be at the Commune by the Great Wall hotel along the Bataling Highway, we visited the Bataling section of the Great Wall - the most touristy but with the easiest access. We went up the Great Wall via one of these ancient looking cable cars which looked liked they had been there since China first opened its door to the World......scary.....

Once up there, we explored a small section of the Great Wall with a million other Chinese tourists (which you cannot see in the photos - thanks to the photographer's excellent skills)!

We would have loved to decend via one of these roller coaster type cars but our transportation was waiting for us at another end of the wall. So, back to using the old cable cars.

After the Great Wall, we were taken to our hotel - Commune by the Great Wall. A hotel made up of individually designed and built villas by a section of the Great Wall. It was so far away from the city that the sky was clear and the air clean!

We stayed in the Little Red House.

As most villas have at least 4-5 rooms, we couldn't take a whole villa. I booked us into inter-connecting rooms, not realising that there is no "main building", only villas. When we got there, I thought we were going to have to share the house. Because if we had to, it would have been quite uncomfortable as the rooms are not big.

Luckily, we didn't have to and the girls were free to explore the whole house.
