The wedding ceremony was held at Eglise de la Sainte Trinite, Caen. In the mid-11th century, Caen was the favourite residence of William the Conqueror and Queen Matilda. When living there, they built a "his and hers" abbey. William's Abbey for Men (Abbaye aux Hommes) and Matilda's Abbey for Women (Abbaye aux Dames). The wedding was held at the abbey church of Abbaye aux Dames, La Trinite. Queen Matilda lies buried here in the choir under a slab of black marble.
