Meeting with the teachers

I never look forward to these meetings. Whilst I am interested in finding out about Tasha's progress at school, I feel lost at these meeting coz I never knew what questions to ask. Anyways, my feelings are irrelevant as these meetings are here to stay.

While waiting for my turn to see the teachers, I checked out the children’s artwork on the notice boards outside the classroom. On one board, the children are asked to name their best friends. I noticed that Tasha has been named by 3 children (2 boys and 1 girl). Since she is the only one with 3 “nominations” (there are 2 with 2 nominations), I guess she is well liked in class. This is a great achievement considering she went into this class without her best friends (Chloe went back to the US and Bianca is in 1C). On the other board, the children are asked to write down what their favourite thing to do is. Whilst most children wrote playing in the playground or playing with their friends, Tasha wrote “eating school lunch at the cafeteria”……….

Finally, my turn to meet with the teachers. As always, I have nothing much to ask. I was told that she is a happy and sociable girl. She was a bit quiet in the beginning of the term but now she is very confident in class. Both her English and Chinese language skills have improved, especially her Chinese. She was lucky to have a very experienced Chinese teacher this year and I am happy to see that she has developed (finally!) an interest in Chinese.

To share a recent experience we had on a Chinese library book Tasha took home. The children are generally given a free hand in choosing and borrowing what they like and they usually pick something colourful but not entirely suitable for their level. But last week, Tasha brought home a book titled “撕呀 撕呀”. This book has a simple story, is repetitive and contains certain words she already knows (such as colours and numbers). After we read it together for the first time, I can see that she enjoyed it very much as she asked me to read it to her every night. After reading it together for about 3 days, she wanted to try reading it herself. When it is time to return the book, she could read about 80% of that book. I am so happy with her progress, I wrote to the teachers to share this with them. Tasha got some good words from her Lao Shi which made her more enthusiastic. Hope this continues.

That is all from this meeting…….until the next one…….
