Mid-Autumn Festival

Today is mid-autumn festival. In Hong Kong, we get the day after mid-autumn festival off as a public holiday (since it falls on a Saturday, no difference to us). I guess they expect people to stay up late to "admire" the moon. With the deteriorating air quality in Hong Kong, I am not sure if we will be able to see the moon tonight. Anyways, since we will be picking Geoff up from the airport tonight (returning from Singapore), I "celebrated" mid-autumn festival yesterday with the kids - the kiddy way.

I remembered a game we played one mid-autumn festival. Someone (can't remember whether it is mum or dad or someone else) threw some 50 cents coins in the garden and we went in search of these coins! It must have been fun coz I remembered it till this day. So, this is what I did with the kids yesterday. I took the coins from their piggy bank (we recycle!), scattered the coins around the house and the kids go in search for the coins with their very noisy lanterns (more about that below). Then they fed the piggy bank and we do it all over again! Kept them going for almost an hour.

Can anyone tell me what is it with the singing lanterns? I agree that candles are dangerous for children and I am all for battery operated lights. But the "music" (if you can call it that!) ....why? Most of the time it is some awful oldies. If anyone can tell me how to break that thing, I would be eternally grateful!
