We drove around Monterey in the morning and stopped at Dennis the Menace park. Note it's not the really mean looking Dennis the Menace from the Beano and Dandy comics. This is the cuter looking US version.
Then we stopped by at Fisherman's Wharf for lunch. They have the best Clam Chowder in a bread bowl! Tasha absolutely loved it.
After lunch, we drove to Carmel (of Clint Eastwood fame - he is the mayor there), a quaint little seaside town with a lot of rich residents! When we got there, the girls were asleep, so we drove along the coast admiring the houses. Some looked like they came right out of a fairy tale.
There is also an area with lots of big mansions and the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, all along the "17-mile Drive". One has to PAY to get in. But we figured, since we were here, we might as well go. So, we paid the US$10 entrance fee and drove in. Unfortunately the mansions are so big (and most of them face the ocean), we could hardly see any of them........
This is the only photo we have of the 17-mile Drive - the Lone Cypress, a famous landmark.
Once the girls woke up from their nap, we hit the beach. The sand was sooo soft but the water was sooo very cold.
After Carmel, we were going to drive down south using the scenic route (Highway 1) and take in the Big Sur along the way. Unfortunately, there were numerous forest fires still burning around the Big Sur area and part of Highway 1 was closed until further notice. So, we had no choice but to take less scenic but quicker 101 instead.
