From Dryden, we went by air (via Philadelphia!) to Bar Harbor. As our normal cautious self, we arrived at Ithaca airport more than an hour earlier - not realising that regional airports are not as crowded and therefore more straight forward. Molly - sorry we missed you guys in the morning!
Kids were rather fascinated by small plane
Our connection at Philadelphia was delayed by an hour which was perfect for us - Geoff and Tasha managed to watch the Germany vs Argentina match at the airport!
Right out of Bangor Airport, we stopped by a BIG M for a snack. The girls were very facinated by the decor - 1950s diner.

The girls found a little bird
On the way into Mount Desert Island, for lunch we had our first taste of Maine's lobster at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Shack.

Our lunchhhhhhh....yummmmm

After we filled ourselves with lobsters, we drove into Bar Harbor, our base for the next 2 days.

Shops at the Main Street

The main attraction at Mount Desert Island is the Acadia National Park. We only had a day, so we drove along the main road and stopped at certain points of interests. First stop, Sand Beach.

Next stop, some where between Sand beach and Thunder Hole as the scenery is so beautiful we just had to stop.

And then Otter Point. We didn't stop at Thunder Hole coz the wave was not strong enough that day for us to see anything.

And we arrived at the Jordan Pond House just in time for an early lunch.

After lunch we went for a stroll along part of the Jordan Pond Nature Trail along Jordan Pond.

The infamous Maine blueberries

It was a very hot day and after walking the trail for a while, Tasha started to feel dizzy. so, we went back to the car and drove up Cadillac Mountain. It reminded me of Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, the vegetation looked to me very similar.
On top of Cadillac Mountain, we saw many piles of rocks. They are called Cairns. The word Cairn is Scottish and simply means a pile of rocks. They were used to mark the trail on treeless areas. As trail markers, they keep hikers on a single route, thus protecting fragile subalpine soil and vegetation.

After Cadillac Mountain we drove to the other side of the island to visit Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse (one of many we will be seeing in New England). On route, we drove pass some tiny villages with beautiful white clapboard houses.

A dramatic view of the lighthouse from the other side of the trail
Today was July 4th and there was a firework display at the waterfront of Bar Harbor. As the kids had not fully over their jetlag, we decided not to view it in town (no parking and will take 45 mins to walk back up hill at 10pm!! don't think we were going to make it). Instead we had an early dinner at an interesting cafe called "Cafe this Way" and viewed the firework from our hotel room (we had partial harbor view and so were able to most of the higher ones).

Hey, we visited almost the same places when we were in Acadia. We even went swimming in the sea at Sand Beach (VERY cold!) and hiked all the way up Mount Cadillac.
Lannie
Yup, the water is very cold and as always only Tasha tried it out!
